Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

MEM09226 - Detail structural steel members

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Determine job requirements

  1. Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  2. Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
  3. Identify job requirements from specifications
  4. Determine location and number of beams from design information
  5. Insert beam direction marks according to industry practice or specific project needs
  6. Obtain beam dimensions from design information and insert into shop drawings
  7. Insert beam section designation and cut length into elevation detail and material list along with any general notes
  8. Insert beam levels and beam erection marks and erection clearances
  9. Insert any surface treatment notes as per design information
  10. Discuss timing and process for detailing of columns with fabricator to ensure suitability for fabrication schedules
  11. Analyse column design information to identify all column connections
  12. Elect vertical or horizontal detailing position and viewing direction to suit client requirements and drawing office practice
  13. Insert dimensions for columns from design information
  14. Draw sectional views for splices as per design information
  15. Draw plan views for intermediate sections to illustrate required connections
  16. Insert direction and level marks as well as shim and lifting hitches as required according to design information
